Two brothers, Hani and Mahmoud Almadhoun, started Gaza Soup Kitchen in early 2024 so their neighbors in Beit Lahia would not go hungry. It began by feeding 150 families a day in April 2024 and grew to serving 3,000 people daily.
Today the team cooks at 10 kitchen sites, making simple vegetarian meals such as rice, pasta and khubeza (a wild foraged green), often with very limited supplies.
Mahmoud was killed in a drone strike. His family and friends run the kitchen now, guided by his last word, Mostamreen (مستمرين), "we will continue."
